After René Lacoste retired from tennis, he put together with his friend André Gillier, owner of the largest textile company of France in 1933, the company Lacoste on and he designed the revolutionary Lacoste polo shirt with a green crocodile on the left chest. Lacoste was also the first person who came up with the polo shirt. René Lacoste clothing for tennis, not only produced but also for golf and sailing. In 1951 the company began producing colored shirts. Formerly supplied Lacoste exclusively in the color they called themselves "tennis white". From 1952 the shirts were exported to the United States and gave the brand a upper class-image.
